The Right to Disconnect: Can We Really Ignore Our Employer?

In today’s fast-paced, always-connected work environment, the boundaries between personal time and work have become increasingly blurred. In response, the California Legislature introduced A.B. 2751, the “Right to Disconnect” bill, aimed at giving employees the legal right to ignore work-related communications outside of their designated working hours. Inspired by similar laws in countries like France and Ireland, this bill would require employers to establish clear work hours and protect employees from being expected to be “on call” 24/7.

This legislation represents a significant step towards restoring work-life balance, offering workers the freedom to truly disconnect when the workday ends. However, its future remains uncertain, as debates around the bill continue.
